The memorial at the former women’s prison in Hoheneck documents the political persecution and incarceration of women in the DDR between 1950 and 1989.

Its permanent exhibition makes individual fates visible: up to 24,000 women were imprisoned here, around 8,000 of them for political reasons. Through historical documents, photographs, and eyewitness accounts, it addresses prison conditions, forced labor, and everyday forms of repression.

For the exhibition, three video projections were created that address key themes such as repression, everyday prison life, and interrogation methods. The content is based on historical records and personal accounts from former inmates.
Visitors can engage with their own silhouette in the interactive hallway: six depth cameras track body movement, making them part of the media installation.

The installation uses BrightSign players in combination with custom projection technology and Blender animations.
The most harrowing part of the bunker in Hoheneck is the” water cell”. Because the sewage system was overwhelmed during the imprisoned women’s shift changes, water would accumulate in the cell, forcing those confined there to stand in it.
