The Museum of the City of Adorf/Vogtland has dedicated its new permanent exhibition to the theme of mother-of-pearl and the endangered freshwater pearl mussel.

Visitors not only learn fascinating facts about the material itself but also about the ecological context and the impact of human activity on the habitat of this species.

A special part of the exhibition is the “Habitat Generator.” Using a reconstructed aquascope, visitors can digitally look beneath the surface of a stream and interactively create a habitat for the freshwater pearl mussel.

Ecological issues are explored in a playful way, reinforcing what has been learned before – an approach that appeals to all age groups and offers children in particular an engaging way to discover the subject.

The installation is displayed on a circular screen and controlled via the aquascope’s ring, equipped with push buttons, a grip wheel, and a rotary knob. A specially developed, mechanically decoupled rotary controller ensures intuitive operation, is wear-free and durable, and provides a highly tactile and direct user experience.

The installation demonstrates how knowledge can be conveyed in a sustainable and interactive way, making the habitat of the freshwater pearl mussel vividly tangible.
